Let the Nature be as it is?
Humans have progressed till now with the help of Nature. Every product which we use has some natural ingredient at its base. Products are packaged in a marketable way and hence we don’t understand this. This shows us how dependent we are on the nature not just for our basic needs but also for leisure.
The age in which we live is called as Anthropocentric by Scientists. Anthro means Human and Centric means centered. Meaning, we have made ourselves the centre of this existence. We have assumed that everything is for us and if something is useless to us, it doesn’t have any value. Hence this has given rise to the practice of exploiting Environment and exploiting its gifts.
Many people try to bring change in this attitude. If some people are acting negatively, some people try to act positively. But in a Democracy everyone is criticized. Should we interfere in Nature in a positive way is a question. Should humans let the nature take its own course even in middle of all this exploitation? Or should the humans take some action to prevent Ecosystem from exploitation and the Earth from warming?
There is a school of thought of Environmentalists who think rightly that Nature should be not interfered with. Environment conservation is itself an interference. Even if this thought is appealing, this is impractical. The rate at which the Environment is being harmed renders it impossible to sit and watch. Armchair activism and disconnect with actual situation on ground has led to such thinking.
It is a fact that Environment if kept untouched is best for its natural growth. Man cannot replicate nature. It is too complex for his thought. Even, the laws of nature are ruthless. But Humans have also given this Earth as they have taken.
Nature progresses over a larger time period called Geological Time Scale. It is much larger than the thought of humans. Life of Humans is meagre compared to Geological time scale. But the harm caused by humans to nature has been much faster since 1850s.
It is predicted that if we do not act positively for conservation of nature, controlling our emissions etc then the temperature of the Earth will increase about 2 degrees Celsius average by the end of this century. If this happens it will not be possible for some living beings to survive. Plantation of some food grains will fail and some animals will lead to path of extinction.
Taking standard uniform steps all over the globe like Planting trees cannot be a solution to this. We will have to take steps to conserve environment which are location specific. For example, Method of Conservation of Western Ghats will be different than conservation of Savannahs. Both the ecosystems are different and unique. Hence the solutions should be unique too. This can be made possible by making people aware of different types of ecosystems and their importance.
It is important to understand that the age of today demands positive climate action. Sustainable solutions should be devised for this. Communication with the people on the ground is necessary to understand their problems and find location specific solutions for them rather than uniform solutions. Academics should be collaborated with ground realities. Social media activism without any practical knowledge should be discouraged. People should be involved in the process of climate action. Engage. Act. Conserve.
